HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (HIV PrEP) refers to the use of HIV medication by someone who is HIV-negative, in advance of a potential exposure to HIV, to prevent HIV infection from occurring. When taken daily as prescribed, PrEP is nearly 100% effective at preventing HIV infection.

In early 2018, recognizing the barriers individuals were facing to PrEP access in Alberta, the QTHC launched PrEPAlberta.ca. PrEPAlberta.ca helps educate community members and providers on what PrEP is, who might benefit from taking it, and how to access/prescribe it.

As of October 1, 2018, Alberta Health provides public coverage for PrEP, making it much easier to access the medication.
