Yeka (she/they)
Peer Outreach Worker
Yeka is a queer Black woman whose identity exists beyond the limits of the binary, deeply rooted in both their femininity and lived experience. As a Peer Outreach Worker with the Peer N Peer program, she is dedicated to empowering individuals within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community by creating safe, affirming spaces centered on sexual health, harm reduction, and barrier-free support.
Their work is grounded in intersectionality, with their Nigerian heritage playing a central role in shaping their worldview. Although Canadian born, Yeka was raised within a culturally rich but conservative West African environment, where openly expressing her sexuality came with challenges. They engaged in intentional self exploration of their identity after leaving her family home, and now stands confidently in her truth as a queer Black woman.
A cornerstone of Yeka’s journey is their recovery from substance use. After four years of lived experience with addiction rooted in trauma, she began her healing journey in 2018 and has been street drug–free for seven years. This experience informs their approach to their work as a Peer Outreach Worker which has been through meeting people where they are at, without judgment, and offering hope through lived experience.
Yeka is especially passionate about advancing sexual health education within Black, African, and Caribbean communities. She recognizes how cultural stigma and shame can create barriers to safe practices and open dialogue. Through their work, they aims to foster culturally responsive advocacy, build trust, and strengthen community connections.
With seven years of experience in the human services sector, Yeka has contributed to developing programs that support 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in accessing safe and sustainable housing. Their background in the housing sector has strengthened their ability to navigate systems, provide referrals, and support individuals facing complex challenges.
Outside of her professional work, Yeka prioritizes holistic wellness. She enjoys yoga, weightlifting, and spending time outdoors, especially paddleboarding and exploring the mountains in the summer. They also find joy in gardening, caring for her dog, and diving into true crime podcasts, conspiracy documentaries, and lifelong learning.
